3D Scanners offer an engineeringly fast spatial digitization of objects using structured light and laser sensor technologies for reverse engineering.

In situations where it is necessary to obtain an exact digital copy of a physical part, sculpture, or even a human body, traditional measurements with calipers cannot capture complex organic geometries. Spatial digital scanners solve this problem by projecting light patterns (structured light scanners) or pulsing beam rays (laser scanning) onto the target object. The camera sensor instantly captures the light deformation when it hits the surface, and the built-in microprocessor calculates distances in seconds, generating a massive point cloud. With the help of specialized software, this data is combined into a seamless three-dimensional polygon mesh, which can be further edited or optimized in the CAD environment. Modern handheld and stationary scanners guarantee an impressive accuracy of up to 0.02 millimeters, allowing mechanics to create digital duplicates of worn car spare parts or architects to save virtual copies of historical artifacts. To prevent optical distortion in cases of reflective surfaces, a special matting spray is often used.

Scanning optics parameters and benefits:

  • High-precision point cloud: Advanced light sensors capture thousands of points per second, guaranteeing that even the smallest mechanical threads or engravings are converted into digital format.
  • Structured light technology: Using harmless blue or white light, these devices are completely safe for medical facial and body digitization in orthopedic engineering.
  • Handheld mobility: The architecture of portable models provides complete freedom of movement, allowing the operator to freely walk around large-scale objects (e.g., engine blocks) in space.
  • Automatic mesh alignment: The intelligent software algorithm recognizes geometric markers on the surface and automatically stitches different scanning frames into one continuous file.

Fast conversion of asymmetric objects into an exact digital CAD model fundamentally saves engineers and designers working time in the modeling phase. When working in photogrammetry or scanning tents, where flicker-free, high lumen density background lighting without chromatic aberration is needed, the ideal solution is 24V LED strips.
